Took time recently to do a few days worth of research into information on volunteer nurses stationed in Finland with the Waffen SS. I found this very unique photo of a Norwegian volunteer front nurse, and had to colorize it.
After posting it on a colorized photo forum a very well-read acquaintance shed some light on who this is. Front Nurse Grete Knudsen. She served with an SS-Gebirgsjäger unit in Finland, as denoted by her cap Edelweiß. Next to her ‘frontsösters’ bag hangs a Finnish Puukko knife. Her brother Hans-Christian was an SS-Untersturmführer and was killed Feb. 25, 1943 by sniper fire near Gongozi ,Russia; she wears a black armband in mourning.
She and others like her are featured in this short and rather sad documentary that sheds light on Norwegian volunteer nurses and how post-war shunned they were and still are for volunteering medical services with the German military. Her personality, tinged with elderly pain and 60+ years of pride and guilt, is as bright as ever. Very glad to have learned such an amazing amount of history in such a short amount of time. Her section is linked, but I suggest you watch the whole film.
